A few blocks away from where we live there is a street called Atalanta. Like the names on the bridge here in Deventer, or the price of the waterfront properties across from the hospital, it has been on my “need to Google this list”.
Bob, Hans, Henk, Ad, Kees, Frank, Freek, Peter, and Piet, among many many others, as it turns out were members of the first cycling club. A house on the lake costs 725.000 EUROS. Then, it was Atalanta’s turn:
Fierce, fast, and fiercely independent, this Atalanta was no ordinary mortal. Raised by bears and blessed by the gods, she stunned Greece with her speed and skill. She vowed to marry only a man who could outrun her and many lost their lives trying. But one clever suitor, Hippomenes, used golden apples from Aphrodite to win her heart… and the race.
Ooff. Those Greek ladies took no prisoners. Moral of the story? Never underestimate a woman who runs her own path.
Also, she is a butterfly (which I think the street name refers to as all the neighbouring streets carry the names of insects…)
