Hello beautiful people,
For a while I was struggling to find my rhythm here on Substack. Until now I have been writing organically, and tackling my list topic by topic the way it comes up and not necessarily in a chronological, or logical order.
In the end I am sure it will all come together and make sense, but we are only at the beginning. That is why I thought some structure was in order. Now I am not necessarily gifted in that department (working as a project manager was a little delusional, but it landed me one of my best friends, so looking back I am glad I made that “error in judgment”).
The combination of having ADHD, 8 pets and living in Romania does not create an environment conducive to structure. So, it is not surprising I did not quite stick to it.
Before we dive into this week’s roundup:

ESSAY
In celebration of Earth Day I wanted to honour the work of Vlad sadici. I was introduced to this architect years ago by Oana suciu, the former manager of the Romanian branch of HempFlax. More hemp stories will follow. For weekly essays I will alternate between words and pictures.

COLUMN
Food won the fight between three topics, which means the other two (lonileness and womanhood) have been shelved for now. New here is that from now on I will add photos, if I feel it adds something to the story.

SNIPPET
I am aiming to offer you two a week, whether it is flash fiction, poetry, philosophy, or a small musing.

JOURNAL
Here I am reaching back to last week, as I am a journal behind. I can’t choose a topic. But I promise I will catch up by next week’s Sunday Brunch!

SHORT STORY
This is a sad affair. Two and counting. I have the perfect excuse though. I am writing several shorts, but I am reserving those. I am submitting to three writing competitions in May. Fingers crossed. I am also writing a book. Despite my mother’s curiosity (my number 1 fan) I decided not to share it with anyone until completely done. My deadline is July 21st.
FUTURE REFERENCE
I don’t just write, I also read a lot. Here a few things that have caught my attention and linger. I might circle back tot hem in future posts, or follow up with related external content.
Feminism
The way I forwarded this article via Whatsapp to my female friends, I want to share this with you. I often question what feminism means these days, and I don’t think I found the answer here. Curious to hear what you think!

Gender
While in the middle of working on my weekly column this popped up in my Instagram feed (I have the bad habit of jotting down the basic bones of my ideas on my phone while wandering around the garden – and I really should switch off all my notifications). Call me clueless, but I am not sure how advocating trans rights and advancing women’s rights are at odds with each other? I did recently commented on Instagram about not being willing to handover my womanhood. If we are talking about inclusivity then I want an inclusive conversation on gender. If you have any thoughts on the matter, I am open to be enlightened!

Culture of Celebrity
A screenshot of the Cut’s culture page on the 22nd of April 2024
For me culture is driven by a multitude of forces, not defined by the A-list. It bugged me beyond belief when I went to the Cut’s cultural page to see the first four posts devoted to Taylor Swift’s new album. The current cultural context seems to be dictated by a handful of celebrities, facilitated by (complacent?) media. Shallow and lacking substance, a lot of what lands under my nose isn’t worth the time it takes to read. I asked my friends what magazines they read, and the answer was disturbing. Most have stopped reading and happily report “living under a rock”.

Have a spectacular week!
